Flash Speed Test

What with the current tsunami of over-hyped, over-priced and under-performing ISP packages I thought I’d post a link to a broadband speed test Flash application I developed a while back. Flashmark allows you to view upload and download speeds and select from a range of transfer sizes.

I can package up the source code if there’s anyone interested.

Introducing VillagePHP

Here’s yet another one of my unfinished projects.

VillagePHP is a next-generation community script focused on speed, security and weight. As a crude parallel, think FaceBook or MySpace. But you’re in charge.

Who would find Village useful?

* Business Communities
* Artist/Design Communities
* Neighbourhood Friends
* School Clubs
* SMEs and Organisations
* Co-operatives/Collectives

SMS Plugin for WordPress

Well, that wasn’t too painful.

I’ve just finished work on my first ever WorPress plugin, SMS Press. It gives WordPress admins the option to send global SMS notifications whenever a new post is published.

Features:

  • Send SMS to over 200 Countries
  • Built-in phone book
  • Custom recipient lists for individual posts
  • Credit check feature
  • Truncation and concatenation of SMS
  • Role-based plugin access control
  • Choose normal or SSL delivery for SMS

The SMS provider in this instance is Txtlocal as it’s very quick, only uses carrier-grade networks and has a tiny footprint.

Download SMS Press (beta)

Any bugs (which there may well be), simply leave a comment here.

Jquery up your Backend

I have a content management system I developed a little while back. When I first made it I was extremely pleased with the results, it had some shiny new features not seen that widely on the web, let alone in the back end management tool, things such as drag and drop, pop up fading alert boxes, save via ajax etc.

To achieve these things I did what I always have, I wrote the code from scratch. This involved hours of head-scratching, cross browser compatibility testing, scouring the web for fixes to mind bending browser ‘quirks’, if you have ever done any JavaScript development, you will know exactly what I mean.

Pete Molinari Using Magnolia

I’m pleased to announce that up and coming singer/songwriter Pete Molinari is currently using Magnolia, my open source gallery script, on his website.

Magnolia is a flat-file system (no database) which includes support for jpg, mp3 and flv and features a nifty lightbox and Fancy Upload.

Follow the links at the foot of the gallery to find our more about the script and to download a free copy of it.

Simple AJAX Rating System

Here’s a nice simple AJAX rating system that I’ve hacked together from various other open-source projects.

It’s based around PHP and MySQL. Further instructions and a zipped download can be found over at http://testbed.netstepper.com/ajax_rate/

GeoJoe Release API

GeoJoe, a UK-based IP Geolocation outfit, have just unleashed a smart little API.

The GeoJoe API can:

  • Fetch Geolocation data for single IP addresses;
  • Fetch XML geolocation data for a batch of IP addresses (CSV);
  • Embed a Geolocation badge based on visitor or passed IP address;
  • Embed a country flag based on visitor or passed IP address;
  • Embed a Flash map with real-time visitor plotting (coming soon)
